Early mornings in the McDowell Mountains are always special. Everything is quiet and still and the light is soft, warm, and golden. There were no exceptions the morning I got to photograph Wrigley and Nelly. As the sun climbed, it lit up the tall grass and desert landscape, perfectly complementing Wrigley’s rich golden coat and Nelly’s deep red fur. The colors felt almost tailor-made for them.

Wrigley, the senior Golden Retriever, brought a gentle, steady presence to the session. He moved at his own pace, soaking in the morning air and staying close to his mom. Nelly, the Irish Setter, added a fun contrast—elegant, affectionate, and full of energy. Together, they balanced each other so naturally.

This session was especially meaningful because it was created for their mom, who is starting a new business focused on connecting pets with a trusted network of veterinarians providing post-operative and in-home care. It felt incredibly fitting to photograph her dogs in such a peaceful setting—strong, loved, and supported—mirroring the mission behind her work.

Between shots, there were plenty of snuggles, gentle pats, and moments of just being together. Those in-between moments—the leaning in, the shared warmth, the quiet affection—are always my favorite. They’re where the real story lives.
